Gemino climate neutral in 2021

Climate neutrality and sustainable growth have always been very important to Gemino. With the help of Planetly, we calculated our carbon footprint at the beginning of 2022 in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG). For 2021, we offset 68 t of CO₂ and received a certificate of climate neutrality from Planetly. We decided to offset our carbon by supporting the Bornean rainforest REDD+ project in Indonesia.

Our main objective is to reduce carbon emission further rather than offsetting every year. However, we have relatively little scope for further direct reduction (approx. 0.05%) as we already implemented many measures before starting this carbon footprint initiative: from LED lamps to travel guidelines to the green electricity used in our offices and hosted servers.

Focusing on our translation partners makes more sense as they represent a large part of the emission related to Gemino at 293 t CO₂. We have decided not to take our international translation partners into account in offsetting emission for 2021. Why? Offsetting carbon every year for our partners would not sustainably change the situation. Instead, we would like to create incentives for our international translation partners and freelancers to reduce their carbon footprint by implementing sustainable purchasing guidelines that will have a multiplier effect.
